Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal program that helps low-income households with their home energy bills. LIHEAP provides financial assistance to eligible households to offset the costs of heating and cooling their homes.
In Mississippi, the LIHEAP program is administered by the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS). To be eligible for LIHEAP assistance in Mississippi, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Income Requirements:
- Household income must be at or below 60% of the state median income level
Other Requirements:
- Applicants must be responsible for home energy costs (Head of Household or Spouse).
- Priority is given to households with elderly (60+), disabled, or young children (5 and under)
Applicants will need to provide proof of income, home energy costs, and other required documentation when applying. Both renters and homeowners may qualify for LIHEAP assistance.
LIHEAP funds can be used for various home energy costs including:
- Electricity bills
- Natural gas bills
- Propane/heating oil costs
- Energy crisis assistance (utility disconnections, depleted heating fuel, etc.)
In order to apply for LIHEAP, you will need to submit a pre-application through the Access MS web portal at https://www.access.ms.gov/.
